City will consult residents, businesses on parking strategy

Ottawa (June 18, 2008) - Citizens, business owners and community organizations will have an opportunity to make their voices heard on the future of parking within the City of Ottawa.

The City’s Transportation Committee today adopted the terms of reference for the development of a municipal parking management strategy that will review and update the parking policies found in the 2003 Transportation Master Plan and the former City of Ottawa’s 1994 Parking Strategy. The strategy will also include guidelines for setting hours and rates for metered parking and determining when to introduce paid parking to a new geographic area.

Councillor Maria McRae, Chair of the City’s Transportation Committee, said the new terms of reference were developed in response to concerns by citizens that they were not sufficiently consulted about parking policy decisions. The new terms of reference include an aggressive consultation strategy that will include businesses, community associations, Business Improvement Areas, city advisory committees and the general public.

“The City took the feedback we received and we’re very proud that staff and the public will have an opportunity to work together on a parking strategy that makes sense to residents, businesses and the tourism sector throughout the City ,” Councillor McRae said. “We are delighted that the public and key stakeholders will have an opportunity to provide meaningful input into this process.”

Consultations will take place throughout the summer and the proposed Municipal Parking Management Strategy will be presented to Transportation Committee and City Council this fall, prior to consideration of the 2009 budget.
