| IRSP focuses its STEP on pedestrian safety and unsafe lane changing in July | | | Ottawa (July 2, 2008) – This month, the City of Ottawa’s Integrated Road Safety Program (IRSP), through its Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP), is focusing on pedestrian safety and drivers who make unsafe lane changes. In 2007, six pedestrians were killed and 324 others were injured as a result of traffic collisions. 38 of those injuries were serious. Unsafe lane changing is also a serious issue on Ottawa roads. In 2007, 1,046 reportable collisions occurred on Ottawa roads due to drivers changing lanes unsafely. These collisions resulted in two deaths and 134 injuries – four of them life-threatening.In 2003, two City departments – Public Works and Services and Ottawa Public Health – and the Ottawa Police Service developed a program that strengthens, and provides a comprehensive approach to promote, road safety – the Integrated Road Safety Program. The Program’s goal is to reduce traffic fatalities or serious injuries by 30 percent by 2010. Ottawa residents have identified traffic safety as a top priority. The IRSP is committed to using available resources to make Ottawa roads safer for residents. For more information: S/Sgt.
