| City announces first step for downtown tunnel | | | Ottawa (July 3, 2008) - Today, the City of Ottawa announced that Delcan Corporation has been selected to complete the Downtown Ottawa Transit Tunnel (DOTT) Planning and Environmental Assessment. ''The construction of a downtown tunnel is key as we move forward to build a world-class transit system from the core out," said Mayor Larry O'Brien. ''Today marks the first step in the development of a faster and more reliable transit solution for Ottawa that will make our downtown more accessible for residents and visitors alike.''For the study, Delcan will lead a multi-disciplinary and internationally recognized team of consultants comprised of engineers, planners, architects and other relevant specialists, including Halcrow Group, an international firm based in London, England. The study will develop a plan for grade separating transit through the downtown core, within a study area spanning from Bayview to VIA Station. The DOTT Planning and Environmental Assessment study will consider main transit routes through downtown, the role of Bayview and Hurdman Stations as potential interim transfer points, opportunities for interprovincial linkages, and potential connection to the Via Rail station.“We are looking forward to working with Delcan in completing the study for the downtown tunnel,” said Nancy Schepers, Deputy City Manager, Planning, Transit and the Environment. “We also look forward to working with the public and key downtown stakeholders in helping us develop the best possible plan for the core.”The DOTT Planning and Environmental Assessment study is expected to take approximately 20 months to complete. As has been the case throughout the transit planning process, public consultation will be an integral component of the DOTT study. Outreach activities are anticipated to include a combination of public consultations, business consultation group meetings, stakeholder meetings, as well as Open Houses throughout the course of the study. The DOTT Planning and Environmental Assessment study team will work closely with, and report to Committee and Council at various stages of the study, including presentations on the final recommended plan at the conclusion of the study.
